The two day RYA Start Yachting is an introductory course to sailing for complete beginners. It is a great course to establish whether or not you wish to take up the pastime without investing too much time and money.

By the end of the 2 day course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board.

We also run a separate three day Competent Crew course to complement the Start Yachting course.  This will enable you to get your full Competent Crew certificate as well.

Helicopter RescueThis is the course which we hope will never be needed but has the potential to save your life.

It involves some classroom work as well as a session in a swimming pool getting familiarised with liferafts, lifejackets and other emergency equipment and procedures.

It is compulsory for all instructors and other commercial skippers.

Until you’ve tried it the experience of being in the water with a lifejacket and clothing cannot be properly understood, nor can the level of difficulty involved in getting from the water into a liferaft.

We often talk about flares and sometimes glibly refer to the instructions. You’ll be quite surprised to experience letting them off for real and please, don’t try this at home!

Our next diesel engine course will be running on Saturday 25th March 2017.  The cost of the course is £69 which includes the RYA pack.  This course is not an in depth instruction on diesel engines requiring an existing knowledge of diesel engines but is a bit of a ‘Janet and John’ teaching regarding some basic maintenance and fault finding techniques.  Many calls to the RNLI are from yachts with mechanical failure and in many cases their time and your stress can be relieved with a little knowledge of some simple common problems.  It’s suitable for novices so why not have a go.  It’s held in our classroom at Hamble and uses the diesel engine recovered from one of our old yachts.

dayskipper4aCongratulations go to James Danton-Rees, Stuart Ford, Chris Russell and Caroline Manuel(not in photo) who have just successfully completed their Competent Crew or Day Skipper practical, and many thanks to their Skipper Instructor Mike wise for his work during the week.

Well done to another class of Day Skipper shorebased students who also have the opportunity for a free day sail at the end of their course, and we were so blessed with lovely sunny and even warm weather/  What more can one ask.  OK the fog could have lifted a bit earlier but it was great and well done to those taking part.
