The MPSC is recognized by the RYA to run a comprehensive range of Powerboat Training Courses on our new XS 6.5 metre RIB powered by 150HP Mercury engine.

We offer courses starting from Level 2, which requires no previous boating experience, right through to Advanced.


Our focus is on fun, safe and inspiring training from Mercury Yacht Harbour on the Hamble We only run courses on a ratio on a maximum of one instructor to three students.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course   £220 (£199 low season)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The RYA Powerboat Level Two Course is one of our most popular courses. 

It provides excellent hands on, confidence building course whilst learning in the fun and safe environment of The Solent.

This two day entry course designed for the complete beginner to power boating.  It also equally suits those new to boating as well as those who have been on the water for many years, perhaps in another discipline.

The course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and enables you the option to apply for the International Certificate of Competence from the RYA. Once qualified, with will enable you to charter the club rib out in the Solent area. 

Please note that in order to charter the RIB, there needs to be a SRC VHF certificate holder on  board. Click here for details on the course.

Intermediate Powerboat Day Cruising Course   £225

The Intermediate Powerboat Course is a two day course aimed at teaching powerboating up to the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day and who want to be better equipped to plan, execute and enjoy those passages.

The assumed knowledge is that you should be able to demonstrate boat-handling skills to the standard of Level 2 coastal and it is recommended that you hold a First Aid Certificate and a SRC VHF Operator’s Certificate.

The course aims to raise the standard of the basic ‘building blocks’ of boating achieved on Level 2.


 RYA Advanced Powerboat Day and Night Course   £245 

This two day intensive course suits both keen amateurs and professional users alike.

Participants should possess a number of years experience and already be very capable powerboat handlers and it is assumed that they are well up to the standard of the level 2 course. 

The course teaching boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day or night in tidal coastal waters.

Your chartwork & navigation skills should be up the standard of RYA Day Skipper Theory.

You are also required to hold a First Aid Certificate and a VHF operators certificate.

The Advanced Powerboat Certificate cannot be commercially endorsed. The minimum age is 17yrs.

If you wish to work commercially then you will need to take an Advanced Powerboat Examination. You don’t have to undertake this course before attending an exam, although it does count towards the mileage/hour requirements.

Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment

This is aimed at assessing your boat handling skills and the expectation is that you are able to completely demonstrate capability in all of the ‘can do’ areas in the Powerboat Logbook (G20), as well as your theory and background knowledge.

All course fuel and relevant certificates/ logbooks/course notes, as well as wet weather gear (except footwear/headgear/gloves) is provided for you.

The cost of this course is included in the PBI course.

Powerboat Instructor   £390

The instructor is a competent and experienced powerboat handler who has been trained to teach powerboating up to the standard of the Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate.

You should have logged at least 5 seasons experience of powerboating preferably in a range of boat types and sizes. For those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full time occupation, this is reduced to one season .

You will hold the RYA Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate and a valid First Aid Certificate or a type approved by the RYA.

This is an intensive 3 day course which is a mixture of continual assessment and instruction. The last day of the course is a moderation day where another trainer assesses the students and the work of the course trainer, as well as providing an alternative perspective of the scheme.

In order to be eligible for this course, you must have attended and successfully completed a Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment.
