RYA/MCA Short Range Practical Assessment

This is a practical assessment is to complete your SRC online course. You’ll need to bring with you the evidence you have attended a classroom or completed an Online VHF Radio course (certificate) and you must bring an up to date Passport type photograph.

The practical examination is taken on modern ICOM Marine Radio Training Simulators (IC-M603)

Please note that you are required to revise the RYA VHF Radio Handbook/eBook before you attend the exam.

You will need to bring with you the evidence you have attended a classroom or Online VHF Radio course (certificate) and an up to date Passport type photograph.

The Assessment

Assessment Syllabus

• 30 minute RYA VHF exam theory paper
• Practical assessments include:
• Operation of Marine VHF Radio equipment
• Routine situations
• Distress situations
• Urgency situations

There is plenty of opportunities to undertake hands-on Radio practice time before you sit the exam/assessments.

The whole assessment will take up to 2 hours to complete and you will be notified after the assessment if you have passed or failed the exam.

We highly suggest you take our VHF Radio Quiz to check your knowledge before you come to the final RYA SRC examination.

We will give you plenty of time familiarise yourself with the VHF DSC training radios before you sit the exam/assessments.

Venue

The assessments are run in central London and also at our Broadway Base in Hamble.

Paying for your SRC Exam

Club Members

If you’re a club member and at time of booking have paid the discounted price of £119 for both course and exam, then there is no further charge.

Please be aware that once booked on the SRC assessment, that should you cancel less than three weeks before the assessment, you will be liable to pay the exam fee of £60 to re-book.

Non Club members

IF you are not a club member or did not take either the online or classroom course with us then your required to pay the SRC Exam fee to the RYA. Should you be unsure, please call or email us.

The fee is £60 and is paid to the RYA directly, the new system to pay for the exam is completed online via the link below.

If for any reason you cannot pay for the exam online you can contact the RYA on +44 (0) 2380 604158 between 0900-1700 Monday to Friday UK local time to arrange payment.

An additional £10 fee is payable if using this service.

Previous Experience Required: Must have completed the Online or Classroom RYA SRC Course.

Ability after Course & Assessment: Legally operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel.

Medical and Dietary Declaration

Having a medical condition need not necessarily prevent you from taking a full part in the course but the Club Principal must be aware of any potential problems.

If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a course, speak to us on the clubline prior to your course.

By completing the course booking form you make the following declarations and undertakings:-
I hereby declare that I have recorded below details of any medical condition which may affect my fitness to participate in the course and in particular I have included details where I suffer from asthma/bronchitis, angina or heart condition, fits, fainting or blackouts, severe headaches, diabetes, travel sickness, allergies to medication or other allergies.

I undertake to inform the Metropolitan Police Sailing Club Ltd and the course instructor of any relevant medical condition which may become apparent between now and the start of the course, and of any medication I am taking.

I have included below details of any dietary requirements and any allergies, including allergies to food and medication.
