The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is an elementary course that covers seamanship, navigation and meteorology and is suitable for beginners and students with little or no experience.
On the intensive course, five days shared accommodation and a free days sailing onboard one of the club yachts is also included.
The weekend course runs Saturday and Sunday over 3 weekends.
Unless you have extensive experience, we recommend that you complete this course prior to taking the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course.
Intensive Course – 0800 Saturday until approximately 1600 Thursday.
Students will meet and finish at the Broadway base, Mercury Yacht Harbour, Hamble.
Weekend course 0900 – 1700 each day at the Broadway base.
• The basics of seamanship
• The essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
• Electronic charts
• Position fixing
• Plotting a course to steer
• Weather forecasting and meteorology
• Collision regulations
• Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
• Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
All study course materials, including the theory course notes.
Shared accommodation for 5 nights on the Intensive course.

Previous Experience Required: None
Ability After Course: A knowledge of seamanship, basic navigation, pilotage, safety procedures and Collision Regulations for use in local waters.

Having a medical condition need not necessarily prevent you from taking a full part in the course but the Club Principal must be aware of any potential problems.
If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a course, speak to us on the clubline prior to your course.
By completing the course booking form you make the following declarations and undertakings:-
I hereby declare that I have recorded below details of any medical condition which may affect my fitness to participate in the course and in particular I have included details where I suffer from asthma/bronchitis, angina or heart condition, fits, fainting or blackouts, severe headaches, diabetes, travel sickness, allergies to medication or other allergies.
I undertake to inform the Metropolitan Police Sailing Club Ltd and the course instructor of any relevant medical condition which may become apparent between now and the start of the course, and of any medication I am taking.
I have included below details of any dietary requirements and any allergies, including allergies to food and medication.
