What is this course: 

This is a Shorebased theory course based in a classroom with face to face tuition with chartwork.

Who is this for:

The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course is highly recommended if you have just joined our club, are inexperienced crew or even for those wanting to refresh their skills. It is introduces members to a basic and easy to understand navigation and safety awareness for all wishing to sail at our club and is a the foundation towards taking the Day Skipper theory.

Course topics include:

  • Charts and Publications- How to read them, what do they tell us.
  • Safety- Do’s and Don’ts on board a boat.
  • Engine checks – What to look for.
  • Buoyage- What do they tell us.
  • Tidal awareness- How to work out depth and tidal stream.
  • Visual and electronic navigation – GPS what is it, terms and use.
  • Pilotage- How to get in and out of a harbour.
  • Rules of the road- How to avoid a collision
  • Anchoring- Where to and How to.
  • Weather forecasts- Where to source and how to read for sailing
  • Passage planning- Basics on how to plan from Port to Port.
